Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
